Fernie - an interesting historical backdrop

Fernie previously known as "Snow Valley" is located in the picturesque Elk Valley and enjoys the majestic grandeur of the Canadian Rockies nestled in the southeast corner of British Columbia. Fernie BC, named after William Fernie, who, reported one of the biggest discoveries of coal in the region way back in 1897, has a very interesting legend associated with it. It is said that William Fernie saw an Indian chief’s daughter wearing a necklace of black stones, which he knew to be coal. On inquiring about the location where they found the coal, the chief put a condition that William would have to marry his daughter in return for the information. However, once the chief told Fernie of the location, William refused to marry his daughter. The chief then laid a curse upon the valley stating that it would meet with Fire, Flood and Famine. Incidentally, Fernie has met with major disasters in the form of two huge fires that almost wiped out the town (in 1904 and 1908), flood in 1916 when the Elk River overflowed and submerged huge parts of West Fernie. The near famine conditions during the Great Depression had the people thinking that the curse would never end! On August 15, 1964, members of the Kootenai Tribes, headed by Chief Ambrose Gravelle, known as Chief Red Eagle, assembled in Fernie for the ceremonial lifting of the Fernie Curse. Mayor James White made amends with the Chief by smoking the "Pipe of Peace" with Chief Red Eagle.
