Things to know about Powder Skiing in Canada

The word “powder” in powder skiing, Canada is simply fresh snow. Deriving name from talcum powder due to some similar properties like lightness and dryness (in the Rockies not the coast), powder skiing can be problematic for novice skiers. First of all, one must understand that Powder skiing is vastly different from skiing on hardpack; the techniques that work well on packed snow won't work in powder. But just by following few powder skiing exercises one can surely enhance skiing skills. Here are few of them:-

  • Weight Distribution- Try to keep your weight nicely centered and more evenly distributed on both skis. There is more resistance in powder, so you have to steer both skis through it. This is where “fat powder skis” really help by providing floatation on the snow.
  • Steering - The deeper the powder, the harder it is to turn your skis. Apart from straining every muscle in your legs, you can solve this with lots of flexion and extension. As you finish the turn, sink down, bending your ankles, knees and waist, to help steer both skis. Then extend your legs to start the next turn. Again keep your speed up to stay on top of the snow.
  • Turn Shape - Powder slows your skis down so you won't get as much speed up on steeper slopes. This means you can ski a much more aggressive line while, at the same time, keeping your speed under control. This is part of the beauty of powder skiing - you don't have to rush to finish your turns, you can float through them gently...

Make your dream of skiing on fresh powder come true by powder skiing in Canada at Island Lake Lodge Cat skiing. Clean air, pristine dry snow and amazing sights beckon you, get ready for some great and mind-blowing deep powder action.
